Notes:

Cold and windy.
Boston Marathon held today.

In 1917, Boston was 12-10 versus New York.
Since start of 1916, Mays, Ruth and Leonard have a 19-10 record against the Yankees (Ruth 9-1; Mays 5-4; Leonard 5-5). Ruth was 4-5 in 1916 and 5-0 in 1917.

Ruth’s 1917 results were: 6-4 and 4-2 wins at Fenway and 10-3, 3-1 and 8-3 wins at Polo Grounds. In these games he allowed 9, 5, 3, 8 and 6 hits, respectively.

Game 1 should not have been close. All morning, Boston had men in scoring position, 9 men on base in first seven innings. In 7th, loaded the bases with one out, but could not score. Yankees’ Allan Russell is a good spitball pitcher.

See second game of April 19 for scores and end-of-day standings.
