Play-by-play:

Boston 1st — Hooper doubled to began the game. Shean sacrificed Hooper to third. Strunk out on a swinging bunt, catcher to first, Hooper scored. Ruth tripled to deep center (way over Milan’s head). McInnis grounded out first unassisted.

Washington 2nd — Judge and Foster singled. Casey grounded into a double play.

Boston 4th — Ruth singled to right. McInnis sacrificed Ruth to second. Whiteman was hitby a pitch. Scott flied out to right. Hoblitzell flied out to center.

Washington 4th — Strunk robbed Shanks of a triple with a great catch. The next hitter, Judge, hit a fly ball that Whiteman dropped.

Boston 6th — With 1 out, Ruth doubled to center. McInnis flied out left. Whiteman walked. Scott popped out to shortstop.

Washington 6th — Shotton walked and moved to second on Lavan’s out. Ruth picked Shotton off second, pitcher to shortstop. Milan singled to left. Shanks flied out to right.

Washington 7th — Judge struck out. Morgan walked and was forced at second by Foster. Casey grounded a single into left. Ayers followed with a single down the right field line. Hooper slipped and his throw went into the crowd, Foster and Casey scored, Ayers to third. Shotton walked. Lavan lined to second.

Boston 8th – With two outs, Ruth doubled. McInnis was intentionally walked. Whiteman singled to center, Ruth scored (game tied 2-2). Scott grounded out second to first.

Boston 9th — Hoblitzell singled to right. Agnew’s grounder to shortstop forced Hoblitzell (unassisted) and Lavan’s throw hit Hoblitzell in the head and rolled into right field. Agnew advanced to third. Schang ran for him. Hooper hit a sacrifice fly to center, Schang scored.

Washington 9th — Morgan walked. Foster was safe on a bunt single, Morgan to second. Casey singled, Morgan to third, Foster to second. Johnson pinch hit for Ayers. Johnson hit a long sacrifice fly, Morgan scored the tying run.

Boston 10th — Ruth’s 5th hit, a double to right, came with one out. Ruth was thrown out trying to steal third by Ainsmith. McInnis made the third out.

Washington 10th — With one out, Shanks singled. Judge singled, Shanks to second. Morgan walked to load the bases. Foster hit a sacrifice fly to Whiteman in left, Shanks scored.

Notes:

Ruth went 5 for 5 (3 doubles, single, triple). His batting average is now .500 (16-for-32).

This was Boston’s sixth consecutive loss. The game started at 3:30 pm, an hour earlier than usual in order that the Red Sox could catch the Federal express train for Boston.

On the road trip, Boston batted .259 (41-for-158).
