Play-by-play:
Second Inning
Yankees — Pratt lines a single to left. Pipp sacrifices Pratt to second, pitcher to first, a good play saves a hit. Pratt tries sneaking home but Agnew blocks the plate, and Pratt is out pitcher to first to pitcher to catcher.
Fifth Inning
Yankees — With one out, Pipp walks. Bodie doubles to deep right, Pipp to third. Miller strikes out. Hannah is walked intentionally, loading the bases. Bush gets two strikes on Thormahlen, then turns and picks Bodie off second, pitcher to shortstop.
Sixth Inning
Red Sox — Hooper opens inning by grounding to shortstop and Peck makes an error, Hooper to second. Shean sacrifices Hooper to third. Strunk safe on fielder’s choice, Hooper out at home, shortstop to catcher. Strunk advances to second. Hoblitzell grounds out to shortstop as Peckinpaugh goes behind second to throw Hoblitzell out and end the inning.
Eighth Inning
Yankees — With 2 outs, Bodie lines a single to right center. Miller flies out to center as Strunk catches his liner at his shoetops.
Ninth Inning
Red Sox — Pitching only his second major league complete game, New York’s Herb Thormahlen has a no-hitter with 2 outs to go in the bottom of the 9th inning. Shean began the inning by lining to Miller in center field. Amos Strunk, who missed yesterday’s game with a bruised left hand, singles to left. Ruth pinch-hits for Hoblitzell (1-28, .036). Ruth raps the first pitch into center. Strunk races around third. Miller tries to throw Strunk out at third, but Strunk makes a brilliant slide around Baker and is safe. After a brief conference on the mound, McInnis is walked intentionally, loading the bases. Whiteman hits a fly ball to medium left field (he didn’t squeeze and swung away, starling the defense). Bodie camps under it, but is apparently too anxious to throw home, and drops the ball. Bodie recovers to make a throw home, but it’s too late. Strunk scores the winning run.
Notes:
The Boston Globe said the Yankees were “running the bases like a troupe of octogenarians.” Bush picked off Ping Bodie in the 2nd and Pratt in the 3rd and was helped by good defense as Hooper, Strunk and Whiteman all made sterling plays. In the 6th with the bases loaded, Bush picked Bodie off second.
The Red Sox left for Philadelphia at 7:30pm; the Yankees left town at midnight.
