Dick McCabe debuted in the Connecticut League in 1914 and was signed by Boston. He spent the following season with Lynn, Massachusetts, but was injured for most of 1916. McCabe went 15-13 for Buffalo in the 1917 International League.

During the early part of 1918, McCabe was Boston’s primary batting practice pitcher. In 1920, McCabe was 22-6 with a 2.22 ERA for Buffalo and returned to the big leagues for three games with the Chicago White Sox in 1922. He continued playing in the minor leagues until 1933. His minor league career numbers over twenty years: 259-212, 3.64 ERAPitching
