Dick Hoblitzell of the 1918 Red Sox — 1918: Babe Ruth and the World Champion Boston Red Sox by Allan Wood

Richard Carleton “Doc” Hoblitzell
First Base

6’0″, 172 lbs., Batted Left, Threw Left
Born: October 26, 1888, Waverly, West Virginia
Died: November 14, 1962, Parkersburg, West Virginia

Debut: September 5, 1908

Dick Hoblitzell debuted with the Cincinnati Reds in September 1908 and became their regular first baseman the following spring. In 1911, he was second in the National League in hits and fourth in total bases. In 1914, he slumped and was put on waivers; Boston signed him that July.

Hoblitzell never hit as well in the American League as he had in the National League. In March 1918, he passed an examination for the Army’s Dental Corps (he came from a family of dentists) and left for military service in June.

Hoblitzell did not return to the major leagues after 1918. He played in the International League in 1920-21 and was a player-manager for Charlotte in the South Atlantic League for five years. In 1932-33, he worked as an umpire in the International League.
