Jean Dubuc of the 1918 Red Sox — 1918: Babe Ruth and the World Champion Boston Red Sox by Allan Wood

Jean Joseph Octave Arthur Dubuc
Pitcher

5’10”, 185 lbs., Batted Right, Threw Right
Born: September 15, 1888, St. Johnsbury, Vermont
Died: August 28, 1958, Fort Myers, Florida

Debut: June 25, 1908

Jean Dubuc began his big league career in Cincinnati in 1908 and played for Detroit from 1912 to 1916.

After the Pacific Coast League ended its 1918 season early, Dubuc joined the Red Sox on July 25. He pitched in only two games for Boston, one of them a complete game loss in the final game of the season. In his only at-bat in the World Series, pinch-hitting in Game Two, Dubuc struck out.

He played for the New York Giants in 1919, but was sent to Toledo the following year. The reason for his demotion became clear later that year, when it was discovered that Dubuc had advance knowledge of the 1919 World Series fix. Testifying before a grand jury on October 5, 1920, he presented a telegram from former pitcher and gambler Bill Burns stating the series was fixed. Dubuc didn’t say whether he placed any bets, but admitted telling teammate Rube Benton about the telegram.

By the time the case came to trial, Dubuc had fled to Canada, where he played semi-pro ball and generally kept out of sight. He returned — without punishment — to organized baseball as a scout and signed Hank Greenberg for the Detroit Tigers in 1935.
