Defeated Seattle 2-0 to open 2000 season on April 2 at Safeco Field (7 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 11 K, 2 BB). No runner advanced past second base. Third straight Opening day win and 11 K for third consecutive opening day (4/1/98 at Oak., 4/5/99 at KC, 4/4/00 at Sea.)…Roger Clemens (1988) only other Red Sox pitcher w/ 11 K on Opening Day…Now 3-0 w/ a 0.90 ERA in 3 Opening Day starts for Boston (20 IP, 11 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 31 K).

Had 12 K in 7.1 IP (5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB) to earn his second victory of season in a 5-2 win at Anaheim on April 9.

Improved to 3-0 on April 15 with a 14-2 win vs. Oakland (7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, BB, HR, 9 K, HBP)…1st time in last 11 regular season outings that Martinez failed to K 10 or more…2nd inning solo-HR by O. Saenz was 1st HR off Martinez since September 10, 1999 at New York Yankees (Chili Davis, 2 inn.).

After 9 days off (Rain PPD) went 7 IP (5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 8 K) in 6-3 victory at Tex…8 K was lowest total as starter since 8/8/99 at Ana. when he had 5 K in 5 IP, excluding 10/2/99 at Balt. (1 K) and 8/14/99 vs. Sea. (6 K) in relief.

Improved to 5-0 (1st time he won 5 G in April) by defeating Clev. 2-1 on 4/30 (7 IP+ 1 batter, 5 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 10 K)…Was ejected by home plate umpire Tim Tschida in 8th inning after hitting R. Alomar with a pitch (1st time since 9/24/96 at Phi.). His 3 BB was the most he allowed since 9/4/99 at Sea. (8 IP, 3 BB).

Named AL Pitcher of the Month for April…Was 5-0 w/ 1.27 ERA (35.1 IP, 22 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 8 BB, 50 K), allowing opponents to hit only .173.

Led Sox in W, ERA, K, IP and BAA.

Suspended by MLB on 5/3 for hitting R. Alomar with pitch after home plate umpire Tim Tschida had warned both benches (4/30 at Cleveland). Appealed suspension.

Tied career high w/17 K on 5/6 (previous 9/10/99 at NYY, Sox won 3-1), despite losing 1-0 vs. TB (1st L of season) (9 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, BB). During 9th inng. GM Dan Duquette announced that Pedro would withdraw his appeal, and accept the 5 G suspension.

In 1st G back since suspension, pitched 9-0 CG shutout at Balt. on 5/12 (2 H, 0 BB, 15 K)…9th time in ML career had 15 K or more.

Combined w/ Tim Young and Brian Rose for 8-0 shutout at Tor. on 5/17 (7 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 6 K)…3rd shutout this season he has been involved in. 6 K is lowest total in GS since 8/8 at Ana. (5 K, 5 IP), Sox won 9-3. He has allowed 1 ER in his last 4 GS (32 IP). The latest in the season that he had a sub-1.00 ERA (0.90 ERA; 6 ER, 60.1 IP).

5/23 Gave up a season-high 7 H and 3 ER (7 K, 3 BB) in 8 IP on way to a 3-2 loss vs. Tor…

Pitched 3rd CG (2nd CG shutout) in a 2-0 Sox win at NYY (4 H, 9 K, 1 BB) vs. R. Clemens on 5/28.

3-2 record in May w/ a 0.86 ERA (4 ER, 42 IP). Had 54 K while allowing 22 H and 7 BB.

Allowed 1 H and 1 BB (10 K) in 2nd consecutive shutout (Combined w/ D. Lowe), a 3-0 win vs. Clev on 6/8…No runs in last 17 IP…0.95 ERA now 2.12 pts lower than 2nd best competitor, James Baldwin (3.07).

Allowed 6 H and 1 ER in 6 IP (2 BB, 7 K) on 6/14 in NY to get his 1st ND of the year, a 2-1 Sox loss…Last ND came on 9/15/99 at Clev., a 6-4 Sox win.

Allowed 3 solo-HR in a 3-0 loss vs. NYY on 6/20…Allowed 5 H and 1 BB (9 K) in 8 IP.

Allowed 3 HR for 1st time since 9/24/98 vs. Balt. (C. Pickering, C. Hoiles and B.J. Surhoff).

Gave up a season high 5 R, 4 ER and 3 HR in a 6-5 loss at Tor on 6/25. The last time he surrendered 4 ER in a G was 6/9/99 at Mon, the last time 3 or more HR in consecutive G was 6/5/98 vs. NYM (4 HR) and 6/10/98 at Atl. (4 HR). He allowed a 2-out, 2-R game tying HR to C. Delgado in the 7th. The last time he surrendered a HR with a runner on base was 9/24/98 vs. Balt.

Was placed on the 15 day DL with a left oblique strain on 6/29.

In 1st start since returning from the DL, he received a ND, extending his streak of 4 starts without a win on 7/13…He lasted 7 IP (5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 10 K) leaving with the score tied 2-2 in a 4-3 win vs. NYM.

Won for the 1st time in last 5 starts on 7/18 (8 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 12 K), a 3-1 win vs. Mon. The 3 BB tied his season high.

Won his 11th G of season on 7/23, a CG, 1-0 shutout (6 H, 0 BB, 15 K) vs. CWS. It was his ML-leading 3rd shutout. Improved his ML-best ERA to 1.38. 2nd time this season he allowed 0 BB and the 7th time he allowed 0 Runs.

Named ML Co-Player of the week with Manny Ramirez for week ending July 23. Was 2-0 allowing 11 H, 1 R (ER), 3 BB with 27 K in 17 IP.

Allowed 4 H and 1 ER (1 BB, 11 K) in 4-1 win at Oakland.

Won 4th consecutive decision on 8/2, a 5-2 win at Seattle. Allowed 5 H and 2 ER (2 BB, 7 K) in 5th CG.

Combined w/Bryce Florie for a 9-0 shutout vs. Tex on 8/19. Went 7 IP (3 H, 0 BB, 10 K).

Won 15th game on 8/29 with a CG, 1-hit, 8-0 win at TB (0 BB, 13 K). No-hit bid broken up by John Flaherty’s leadoff single on 2-2 pitch in the 9th.

Went 8 IP on 9/4 allowing 1 ER and 6 H in a 5-1 win vs. Sea. (1 BB, 11 K).

Went 7 IP in a 7-4 win at Clev on 9/14 (4 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 10 K) for his 17th win.

Allowed 5 H and 1 ER in 8 IP in a 2-1 loss vs. Clev. on 9/20.

Won 18th G 4-3 at CWS (5 IP, 1 H, 6 K) in final 2000 app. on 9/26.

Finished 2000 w/4th lowest ERA in team history (1.74).

Led M.L. in ERA and SHO, 2nd in K and CG.

Unanimously selected to his 3rd consecutive Cy Young Award (twice w/Bost., once w/Mont.)…Became the 1st pitcher in M.L. history to be unanimously selected in 3 consecutive seasons…Became the 4th A.L. pitcher since 1967 to win the award in consecutive seasons (R. Clemens 1997-98 w/Tor., J. Palmer 1975-76 w/Balt., D. McLain 1968-69 w/Det.) and the 7th in the M.L. to win the award 3 or more times (R. Clemens 5, G. Maddux 4, S. Carlton 4, J. Palmer 3, T. Seaver 3, S. Koufax 3).

Also becomes the 3rd Red Sox pitcher to win the Cy Young Award (2000 and 1999) joining Roger Clemens (1986, 1987, 1991) and Jim Lonborg (1967).
