Play-by-play, courtesy of Red Sox fans at Your Turn @ The Providence Journal:
Twins 1st: Saberhagen gets Twins one-two-three. He seems to be throwing harder than he did last year, and he even threw a few curveballs. He got the first hitter on a grounder to Stynes at third, and the second on a weak pop to Daubach at first. Only the third hitter, Matt Lawton, hit the ball sharply; he lined to center field.
Red Sox 1st: Stynes strikes out looking. Offerman gets an infield hit. Hatteberg safe on fielder’s choice, Offerman out at second. Everett doubles off the right field wall, Hatteberg thrown out at the plate.
Twins 2nd: Corey Koskie singles center field (groundball, not particularly well hit, up the middle to the right of the second-base bag; Offerman was playing him to pull and had no shot at it). Jacques Jones grounds into a double play, shortstop to second to first. Jones smoked it, but right at Grebeck. In fact, Grebeck knocked it down but, because it was hit so hard, he still had time to track it down and turn the two. (Offerman hung in well at second as Koskie came in hard.) Torii Hunter singles on a 3-2 fastball hit hard through the hole between short and third into left field. Mientkiewicz grounds out, pitcher to first. Saberhagen: 23 pitches overall. Announcer Jerry Remy estimated his fastball topped out at between 85 and 88.
Red Sox 2nd: O’Leary ground out third to first. Bichette (after a foul pop up was dropped by the catcher) hits a home run. Daubach doubles to center. Grebeck singles on a bloop to right, Daubach to third. Nixon singles to right, Daubach scores, Grebeck to third. Stynes singles to left, Grebeck scores, Nixon to second. Offerman grounds into a double play, pitcher to shortstop to first.
Twins 3rd (Wakefield pitching for Boston): Hocking grounds out. Smith walks. Guzman strikes out. Rivas flies out to right.
Red Sox 3rd (Jamie Brewington pitching in place of Brandon Knight): Hatteberg hits a home run to right field. Everett flies out to left. O’Leary grounds out second to first. Bichette grounds out third to first.
Twins 4th: Lawton pops up to Grebeck in shallow left field. Koskie hits a home run to left field. Jones ground out third to first, excellent diving stop by Stynes. Hunter doubles to center, good hustle to stretch it. Mientkewicz (spelling?) pops up to second.
Red Sox 4th: Daubach flies out to center. Grebeck grounds out pitcher to first. Nixon homers to right. Stynes homers to left. Offerman strikes out looking.
Twins 5th (Arrojo pitching for Boston): Hocking singles up the middle. Smith grounds out to first, Hocking gets to second. Guzman walks. Rivas grounds into a double play second to short to first.
Red Sox 5th (Twins pitcher, Johann Santana): Hatteberg walks. Everett flies out to center. O’Leary strikes out swinging. Bichette doubles down the left field line, Hatteberg out at the plate.
Twins 6th (Schourek p, Hillenbrand 3b, Lansing 2b): Lawton strikes out. Koskie flies out to left. Jones doubles down the right field line. Hunter walks. Mientkewicz grounds out to first unassisted.
Red Sox 6th: Daubach lines out to right. Grebeck grounds out shortstop to first. Nixon strikes out looking.
Twins 7th (Erdos p, Neill rf, Merloni ss): Hocking singles to center. Smith singles to left, Hocking to second. Guzman hits into a triple play: line drive to shortstop (runners apparently thought he had caught it, but he hadn’t), Merloni tags Hocking between second and third, then steps on second base to force Smith, then throws to first to retire Guzman (who had stopped running because he thought the ball had been caught).
Red Sox 7th: Hillenbrand singles to left. Lansing flies out to left. Hatteberg flies out to left. Everett strikes out looking.
Twins 8th (Beck p, Burkhart 1b): Rivas grounds out third to first. Lawton grounds out second to third. Koskie grounds out third to first.
Red Sox 8th (Hawkins p): O’Leary grounds out third to first. Bichette grounds out third to first. Burkhart walks. Merloni singles to third, beats the throw, Burkhart to second. Neill strikes out swinging.
Twins 9th (Lowe p): Jones strikes out. Hunter strikes out. Mientkewicz singles to right. Hocking singles to shortstop, Merloni can’t get it. Smith grounds to first unassisted.
