Partial play-by-play:
Red Sox 1st: Doug Davis retired the Sox in order.
Rangers 1st: Chad Curtis led off with a home run against Wakefield.
Red Sox 2nd: Doug Davis retired the Sox in order.
Rangers 2nd: Andres Galarraga, with one out in the second, hit a home run off Wakefield. The runs were also the first this spring surrendered by Wakefield, who had thrown five scoreless innings prior to Tuesday night.
Red Sox 3rd: Davis gets first out. Mike Neill walked.
Rangers 3rd: Bo Porter led off with a triple over the head of center fielder Darren Lewis. Porter moved to third on a ground out by Chad Curtis. Porter scored when Wakefield threw a wild pitch.
Red Sox 4th: Lewis led off with a double to center. Mike Lansing struck out looking. Trot Nixon beat out a grounder to second base for a hit, Lewis scored on Velarde’s throwing error to first (Nixon would have beaten the throw to first anyway). Burkhart brought Nixon home with a soft line drive single to center.
Rangers 5th: Porter singled to score a run in the fifth. He stole second easily but was left stranded when the top three hitters in the order could only muster a ground out between them.
Rangers 7th: Porter chopped a ball over a drawn-in infield to score another run. His hustle to second forced a poor throw to second. He later scored. A defensive gem by Trot Nixon, Aaron Capista and catcher Jason Varitek ended the inning. Nixon cut off a ball hit to the gap in left-center by Mike Young. Kelly Dransfeldt was thrown out at the plate as Capista made an accurate throw to Varitek.
Rangers 8th: Mateo failed to run to first base on a dropped third strike at the end of the inning.
Red Sox 9th: Burkhart led off with a double to deep center and scored on Wilton Veras’s single to center.
Right fielder Carlos Rodriguez made the catch of the day – not just the catch of the game – by jumping at the wall and taking extra bases away from Ivan Rodriguez in the bottom of the sixth inning at Port Charlotte.
The Sox currently have 47 players in Major League camp – 24 pitchers, four catchers, 11 infielders and eight outfielders. Of the 24 pitchers, 23 have Major League experience.
Wakefield also hit Alex Rodriguez with a pitch in the third inning. In three innings, Wakefield threw 60 pitches, 36 for strikes.
