Partial play-by-play:
Twins 1st: Cristian Guzman singled. Edwin Diaz singled. Matt Lawton walked. Corey Koskie singled to right field, Guzman scored. David Ortiz struck out swinging. Torii Hunter hit an 0-1 pitch deep to left for a grand slam home run.
Nomo threw first-pitch strikes to the first six batters he faced and out of his 39 pitches, 24 were strikes.
Red Sox 3rd: Izzy Alcantara led off with an opposite field double to right-center. Alcantara hustled to third on Lou Merloni’s fly out to center and scored on Chris Stynes’s ground out to shortstop.
Red Sox 5th: Dante Bichette was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Troy O’Leary went the opposite way for a two-run home run to left off Brandon Knight. Later in the inning, Chris Stynes doubled with two outs and Jose Offerman drove him in with a single.
Red Sox 6th: With Carl Everett on second and Mike Neill on first and two outs, Alcantara lofted a ball to deep left that appeared to be headed over the wall. Left fielder Jacque Jones timed his leap perfectly and robbed Alcantara of a three-run homer.
Torrential rains and thunderstorms followed after the bottom of the sixth and halted the game, which ended as an official six-inning contest. The rain was the first measurable precipitation in Lee County since October 2, 2000. Only .53 inches of rain have fallen in the Fort Myers area in the last five months. The rain-shortened game was played in 2:01.
