John Wyckoff began his baseball career at age 19 with Wilmington in the Tri-State League in 1911 and joined the Philadelphia Athletics two years later. His best season was 1914, when he won 11 games and pitched in Game One of the World Series.
Wyckoff was prone to wildness, always walking more batters than he struck out. In 1915 he led the American League with 165 walks in 276 innings. He was sent to Boston during the 1916 season and over parts of three years, pitched in only 10 games. He was released by Boston on May 24, 1918 and retired to his taxicab business in Williamsport.
