Harry Bartholomew Hooper Debut: April 16, 1909 Elected to Baseball Hall of Fame: 1971 |
Harry Hooper was the senior member of the 1918 Red Sox. It was his tenth year with the club and he was named captain in June. He played in every game during the season, batting leadoff, and assisted manager Ed Barrow in running the team. Hooper was instrumental in the decision to move Babe Ruth into Boston’s everyday lineup.
Hooper played an essential role as player representative during the Red Sox’s and Cubs’s battles over the division of World Series revenues. When the National Commission withheld the Red Sox players’ championship emblems (the equivalent of World Series rings), Hooper led a decades-long fight for official recognition. He petitioned every baseball commissioner from Kenesaw Mountain Landis to Bowie Kuhn, but no baseball official was willing to overturn the National Commission’s December 1918 ruling.
After 1918, Hooper played two more years for the Red Sox before salary disputes with Harry Frazee led to his trade to the Chicago White Sox. Hooper played five years in Chicago and retired after the 1925 season.
Hooper is the Red Sox career leader in triples (160) and stolen bases (375). He played in four World Series (all on the winning side) in seven years. In Game 5 of the 1915 World Series, Hooper became the first player to hit two home runs in a World Series game. The second homer came in the top of the ninth inning and gave Boston a series-clinching 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.
