MLB.com Game Story:

Bryant Nelson hit a tie-breaking single in a two-run sixth inning Monday, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 4-3 in a split-squad game at Hammond Stadium. Trailing 2-1, Boston went ahead in the sixth when Nelson, a backup outfielder, drove in Damon Buford, who had doubled to score Carlos Baerga. Todd Betts, batting for Brian Daubach, hit an RBI single in the seventh for a 4-2 lead.

Winner Casey Fossum (1-0) pitched three innings to pick up the win, allowing one run and two hits with a strikeout and no walks. “Casey had good stuff,” said First Base Coach Tommy Harper. “He kept out of trouble and kept the ball down.” Red Sox watch: Carlos Baerga, the former All-Star trying to make it back to the Major Leagues, smacked a triple and scored a run. However, he also made his second error of the spring …

Veteran Frank Castillo and youngster Casey Fossum, both candidates for the fifth slot in the rotation, pitched well. Righty Castillo struck out three in 2 2/3 innings. Lefty Fossum pitched three innings, surrendering two hits and no earned runs …. First base coach Tommy Harper managed, with skipper Joe Kerrigan staying at home for the other game against the Tigers … Brian Daubach had a rough afternoon, going 0-for-3 with three strikeouts.
