Another cold day in Paradise. Point – Counterpoint:
Point-In spite of the cold, Derek Lowe’s sinker down was devastating.
Counterpoint: He had 4 pitches at the waist or higher, and 3 got hit real hard. He also neither got a call (rightly or wrongly) nor a batter to chase the slider down. After the somewhat abortive 1st, he looked quite strong.
Point: Juan Pena had another fine outing. Good FB and an effective breaking ball. Gave up but two hits, the 1st a fisted FB that fell to the opposite field. He didn’t let anything bad upset him,
Counterpoint: The second was a 1st pitch FB, up that got crushed for a 2 run homer.
Point: Guapo was dominating when he could keep the ball in the zone. He was all over the place but as it was probably about 35F with wind chill on the mound, not a bad outing.
Counterpoint: Only one effective breaking ball in the outing. Probably because it was so cold.
Point: Jorge De la Rosa is looking very much like a find. Needs experience, not many 20 year olds don’t. He looked like he was several mph faster than anyone else pitching today. I don’t know what his range is but he looked very quick He had some trouble with a high FB hopping out of the zone, hence the two walks, but a talk from JK seemed to settle him down and he ate up the next hitter (bases loaded 2 out) on 4 FBs, 2Ks a ball and a popup to end it. I am impressed.
Counterpoint: Not much to say bad that innings of work with good instruction won’t cure.
Point: Both 3rd basemen, Shea and Wilton had great days. Each had good ABs, Shea even drew a walk (be still my heart.) Wilton hooked a pitch on the outside half into left and next trip had a sharp liner to relatively deep CF caught. Shea made a very good defensive play on a hard hit ball that short hopped him. Wilton made a neat backhand at the bag and great throw to 1st. Then he made a Malzone charge, barehand and throw.
Counterpoint: Hell it’s only ST.
Point: Manny drew 2 walks. Clark had a walk, a line single to CF and an opposite field HR. Dernell had a very hard 6-3; walk and a RBI line single to RF. Tek hit the ball hard 3 of 4 trips with 2 lined outs and a 6-4-3 rally killer.
Counterpoint: Not much in the way of ML pitching there. Jose Lima and Bill Simas and a bunch of interior linemen named Joe. Dougy Miracle took 2 called Ks and watched a foul pop drop. Sox were 0-1 on SB, bum call it appeared.
General: Shane Andrews made his 1st appearance, wearing Hermanson’s #31, I wonder if they washed the uni as Dusty pitched yesterday. Tony C. further pushed me to reiterate my observation that Dauber is a superior fielder. He participated in the Alphonse/Gaston number with Mirabelli.
Food tips: The Italian Sausages w/peppers and onions for $4.25 are the ballpark bargain. The beer vendor in our section today was promoting, “Ice Cold Barley Soup in a plastic bottle.” Got more laughs than sales.

Johnny Damon hit a grand slam, highlighting a six-run sixth inning for the Red Sox, as a split-squad Boston team to beat Detroit, 7-3, at City of Palms Park. Former Tiger Tony Clark also smacked a two-run homer to tie the score after the Tigers had taken a 3-1 lead thanks to Jose Macias’ two-run home run in the fifth.
Red Sox notes: Derek Lowe, Boston’s closer last season, struck out two and allowed one earned run in his three innings. Lowe is moving into the starting rotation this season. … Rey Sanchez made his Boston debut, going 0-for-3 and getting the start at second base. … A slimmed down Rich “El Guapo” Garces saw his first action of the spring, firing a scoreless seventh inning.
